Tyler Smith, owner of To The T Handyman Services

The story

A capstone project that turned into the business

Tyler has been in construction since he was a teenager. Most of those early years went into remodeling, then he moved over to hardwood flooring. In his own words, he has "taken part in five complete home remodels and the construction of two homes from the ground up, in addition to completing countless handyman projects."

The business itself started at school. Tyler officially launched To The T Handyman Services in 2022 as the capstone project for his bachelor's degree at Weber State University, looking for a way to use the spread of skills he'd picked up. His Utah contractor licence was issued the same year.

He worked full-time as a handyman after that, then branched out to get more experience in homebuilding and remodeling. Now he's back to giving To The T his full focus.

Though I am a licensed General Contractor, I started To The T Handyman Services because I prefer working on smaller, varied projects.

The licence

A full general contractor licence, not the handyman exemption

License No: 13021266-5501 (held by Precision Cut Construction LLC). It's an active Utah contractor licence through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing, carrying the B100 General Building, E100 General Engineering and S220 Carpentry and Flooring classifications, with no disciplinary actions on the record.

Why it matters on a handyman job: Utah lets smaller jobs run under a handyman exemption, with a dollar ceiling and a filed affirmation needed above a lower threshold. A person working only under that exemption has to stop at the ceiling. Tyler doesn't, so a list that turns out bigger than it looked stays with the same contractor instead of being handed off halfway.

Anyone can check a Utah licence on DOPL's public lookup. Search the number above or the name Precision Cut Construction LLC.

What's behind the work

  • Over 50 flights of stairs: Tyler has installed over 50 flights of stairs in his career, in hardwood, laminate and LVP.
  • Five full home remodels: Plus two homes built from the ground up, on top of the handyman jobs.
  • Flooring background: Hardwood flooring was his trade before the handyman business. On every floor job a smooth, level subfloor comes first.
  • Insured: The business carries liability insurance.

The work

Punch lists first, then the rest

The core of it is punch list and honey-do work, the run of small repairs a house builds up that never justify calling a separate contractor for each one. Tyler can do a small list in a few hours and stack a few of those in a day, and it's the work he most wants more of. Commercial property maintenance for property managers and building owners sits right alongside it. After those two come finish carpentry and carpentry repair, then drywall repair with paint touch-up.

From there the list branches into doors, cabinets, flooring, fence and gate repair, rot repair and general home repair.

What we don't take on

Electrical work, plumbing, and anything to do with decks. That gets said before a job is booked rather than after someone's standing in the room, so you can line up the right trade without losing a week.

How a job usually starts

Most jobs start with a short description and a few photos through the estimate form, or a phone call where Tyler works out the scope. If it's simple enough you get a ballpark on the phone. If a description isn't enough he asks for more photos or sets a time to come look, and anything with real scope gets a written estimate before it's booked.

The working window is Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday is closed.

Where we work

Brigham City is home base, at the mouth of Box Elder Canyon in Box Elder County. The radius runs roughly 30 to 40 miles: north to Honeyville, Bear River City, Tremonton and Logan, east to Mantua, and south through Perry and Willard into Weber County, where Harrisville, Pleasant View, North Ogden, Plain City, Ogden, South Ogden, West Haven and Riverdale all sit. Ogden is one of our primary service areas.
